meet Clare..

claire

My name is Clare Worley.

My part of London is the ancient parish of St Luke’s Finsbury, since at least the 19th century!

My earliest musical memory of London is my mum and dad teaching me “pop goes the weasel” and “oranges and lemons” as a toddler, then showing me the places mentioned in the songs.

The moment I realised I could sing was singing along to Capital Gold – Buddy Holly, Elvis, the Beatles – in the car as a little kid: my mum and dad might disagree!

When I am not at a Snapshot Songs rehearsal you will mostly find me ensconced in a Costa Coffee writing a novel or blogging, or online, or at yoga or singing with my blues band.

A song that changes the way I’m feeling no matter where I am when it comes on is Higher and Higher by Jackie Wilson creates instant joy… Barley and Grape Rag by Rory Gallagher makes me smile, The Ghost Song by the Doors stills my soul.

If I could only listen to one song for the rest of my life it would have to be the live version of anything by Rory Gallagher, or Beethoven’s Symphony No.7, or I’d choose death before picking a single song!

A typical thing you might hear me say:did you know that (insert random fact)

One word I would use to describe the Snapshot Songs choir is “possibilities!”

“Where’s the chicken…” – a blog post by the Snapshot Songs composer Stuart Hancock

In yesterday’s workshop at the Artizan Street Community Centre, E1, we de-constructed a chicken casserole…in song-form.  The discussion had turned to the latest food trends in the capital, and elderly local estate resident Trudy O’Brien recounted her own gastronomic ‘snapshot’: namely, she ordered a chicken casserole at a nearby café, and didn’t quite get the homely stew she was after.  This triggered a new snapshot song – composed by the group in the ensuing 10 minutes – that involved each of them taking on the role of an ingredient in Trudy’s casserole, coming together singing the refrain “Where’s the chicken…?!”
